What is smart ticketing
ITSO smart ticketing is a way to store and use travel tickets digitally, rather than on paper. Instead of carrying cash or printed tickets, passengers use a smartcard, or a mobile phone with a stored smart ticket in the digital wallet.
Smartcards are reusable, credit-card sized cards that can store one or more tickets.
Mobile tickets are stored on a smartphone, accessed through the phone's digital wallet.
Both types of smart media work in the same way - passengers simply tap or present their card or phone on a reader to confirm their ticket. The system checks the ticket presented and confirms the passenger's right to travel – quickly and securely.
What is an ITSO ticketing scheme
An ITSO scheme is how transport authorities and operators deliver smart ticketing in real life. Schemes can support national concessionary travel, such as the government-funded English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS), as well as local, regional and commercial smart ticketing products.
A smartcard might be branded Smart, Swift, Pop or concessionary travel, but the technology behind it follows the same ITSO Specification.
In some parts of the UK, passengers can use a single smartcard across multiple operators, transport modes and regions. This is known as interoperability - where different ticketing systems work together to enable joined-up travel.
How ITSO makes smart ticketing work
ITSO provides the rulebook for smart ticketing - the ITSO Specification. It sets out how tickets are structured, how systems should communicate, and how schemes are designed so they are secure and able to work together.
This means a ticket issued by one organisation can be recognised and accepted by another, even when different suppliers provide the equipment.
Security is built into the system. Approved ticketing equipment contains a secure component chip called an ISAM, which protects tickets and transactions. Behind the scenes, the ISMS manages the national security framework so that all approved devices can trust each other.
Together, the Specification, ISAM and ISMS create a secure and interoperable foundation for smart ticketing.
This means the card or app may look different from place to place, but the technology underneath follows the same rules — and is trusted wherever it operates.
