We exist to create and maintain the national smart ticketing standard in UK public transport
ITSO is the guardian of the ITSO Specification – the UK’s national standard for interoperable smart ticketing across public transport. Developed in the United Kingdom under Crown Copyright, the Specification enables systems from different suppliers to work together reliably across modes, operators and regions.
We are a not-for-profit, membership organisation responsible for managing the Specification and its supporting systems on behalf of the Department for Transport. Our role is to ensure the framework remains secure, consistent and accessible, supporting reliable journeys for passengers nationwide.
Our members include public authorities, transport operators and technology suppliers. Through collaboration and shared expertise, they shape the ongoing development and maintenance of the ITSO framework, enabling continued investment and ensuring it remains trusted, effective and fit for the future.

About Us
What we do
We maintain and evolve the ITSO Specification, operate the national security environment, and support certification, onboarding and live operation across ITSO schemes.
By setting clear standards and providing independent assurance, we ensure ticketing products and systems from multiple suppliers work together securely and consistently.
Our work is guided by a simple ambition: to enable people to travel with confidence, using ticketing that works wherever they go. This ambition is set out in Our Vision.
