ITSO Made Simple

Your key questions answered

ITSO is the UK’s national smart ticketing standard. We create and maintain the Specification that allows different ticketing systems, cards and devices to work together across public transport.
ITSO was set up to ensure that smart ticketing is consistent, secure and interoperable, so passengers can travel easily across different operators and regions without needing multiple cards or apps.
Our members come from across the transport and technology sector — including local authorities, transport operators, system suppliers and industry partners — all working together to support seamless travel.
The ITSO Specification sets the technical rules that smartcards, mobile apps, readers and back-office systems must follow so they all work reliably with one another.
Without a common standard, every operator or region would need its own system. ITSO ensures nationwide compatibility, making it easier for authorities to deliver smart schemes and for passengers to travel.
Certification confirms that equipment and software meet the ITSO Specification and will interoperate with other certified products. It gives authorities and operators confidence when procuring solutions.
Manufacturers, suppliers, and system providers whose products interact with ITSO smart media or systems need certification to ensure they reliably work within the ITSO environment.
We offer technical guidance, testing, certification, training, and implementation support to help members plan, deploy and maintain smart ticketing schemes.
ITSO-compliant cards can be used on any service that accepts ITSO media — from buses to rail to local authority schemes — depending on the products loaded and commercial agreements in place.
We continually update the Specification to support new technologies, mobile ticketing, and evolving industry requirements, ensuring ITSO remains the foundation for national smart ticketing.
