ITSO is pleased to announce the launch of the V4 ISAM, the newest generation of the ITSO Secure Application Module. This secure, SIM-sized smartcard chip sits at the heart of ITSO-compliant ticketing equipment, processing and protecting transaction data to ensure smart travel remains secure and interoperable nationwide.

Developed to replace existing modules, some of which are approaching end of life, the V4 ISAM provides a modernised, future-ready foundation for ticketing schemes. Built to support the latest architecture and enhanced security capabilities, it delivers the performance required for today’s transport environment - including readiness for features such as Apple Wallet integration.

The V4 ISAM, developed and manufactured for the first time by the ITSO Development Team, also natively incorporates key firmware updates introduced through the ITSO 2.1.5 programme, helping schemes prepare for the next phase of development.

The V4 has been carefully engineered for backward compatibility, meaning it can operate with existing 2.1.4-certified equipment without requiring recertification. At the same time, hardware improvements - including the removal of extended memory requirements and the use of simplified commodity components - enhance voltage tolerance and long-term sustainability.

The launch of V4 marks an important step in maintaining a secure, interoperable and future-ready ITSO environment for the UK transport sector.

ITSO Account Management team are supporting members in transitioning from legacy modules ahead of 2028 lifecycle milestones.
