Seamless travel throughout Europe on a single smart card:
ITSO, Calypso and VDV are the first to demonstrate interoperable multi-application smart ticketing for international public transport use

In an innovative international multi-application demonstration, tickets from three national transport ticketing applications - British ITSO, French NaviGO and German Core Application (VDV-KA) - were loaded onto a card, proving that a single smart card can be used for travel on local public transport networks in different countries.

ITSO announced release of Version 2.1.4 of the ITSO Technical Specification
The changes brought about by the new version, some of which are mandatory, and some optional, improve functionality of ITSO-compliant equipment and the ITSO environment. One of the more significant changes is introduction of the new product type, IPE TYP 24, which replaces the old TYP 24 and makes IPE TYP 24 fit current rail industry requirements. New features of Version 2.1.4 include new methodology for remote fulfilment of products (tickets) and additional functionality that facilitates complex capping (best value) regimes for ticketing schemes offering “pay by use” stored travel rights products.
The new features introduced in Version 2.1.4 are not available to devices which comply with earlier versions of the Specification; however, support for pre-existing features remains in Version 2.1.4 and will do so for any future versions of the Specification until they are no longer in use in the field.
Michael Leach, ITSO CEO, said: “Changes from the previous version make Version 2.1.4 the most stable and useable version of the Specification to date. In its development the editors have been careful to ensure that functionality is greater and more secure than in previous versions and that backwards compatibility, as far as possible, is preserved. This allows better fit of the ITSO Specification for a wide range of smart ticketing implementations, including interoperability between smart ticketing schemes, commercial and rail ticketing, and brings closer realisation of seamless integrated ticketing across Great Britain.”
Michael Leach has been appointed as CEO of ITSO Limited on an interim basis until the 22nd of April 2010.
Michael Leach comes to ITSO with extensive experience in leading high profile functions and programmes, most recently at the Ministry of Justice where he held the posts of Director, Information for Outcomes Programme and ICT Transformation Director. Prior to this he held the position of Chief of Staff to the CIO—Transport for London.
The DfT said they are confident that Michael’s extensive experience in leading significant business change and transformation programmes within the Public Sector in the UK and New Zealand will help him to lead the ITSO organisation, and support the Department in delivering increased rollout of smart ticketing schemes.
