PJ Associates

PJ Associates is an independent consultancy working with government, local and national. We provide advice and assistance on the application of information technology solutions to meet local and national needs, particularly in the areas of ticketing and smartcards.

We have been involved in the technology and commercial application of electronic solutions to automatic cash validation, cash handling and transaction processing since the 1970's. The accumulated knowledge of automated transactions has been used through our involvement in the application of smartcards to public transport ticketing since 1993, during which time we have assisted many successful schemes and authored two books on the commercial application of smartcards to prepayment. We were authors of a major part of the ITSO specifications, particularly those parts dealing with the practical issues of ticketing, and continue to provide technical expertise to the development of ITSO.

Since 1993 we have been involved in many transport smartcard schemes, some that provided interoperability and predated ITSO and others involving ITSO implementation, including:

  • - London Transport's Harrow Trial;
  • - Nottinghamshire County Council's freedom card and subsequent ITSO migration projects;
  • - Greater Manchester;
  • - Yorcard;
  • - SWWITCH and
  • - The Malaysian Touch 'n Go system (3 million cards used for road tolls and public transport).

We offer assistance at all stages of the project from inception until completion, covering:

  • - procurement;
  • - implementation and proof of compliance;
  • - fraud and security and
  • - quality assurance.

Our experience enables us to offer expert advice on the implementation of concessions (including the English National Concession), scholars cards, bus, tram and rail tickets using ITSO compliant smartcards.
